“Arts and culture, such as music, dance and theatre, can play an important role throughout life in supporting people to be healthier and happier. From community projects to arts therapies in clinical settings across the country, evidence-based arts interventions are making a positive difference to people’s health and wellbeing.” Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive of Public Health England

The World’s First Knitted Wisdom Dispensing Machine

The World’s First Knitted Wisdom Dispensing Machine was created for the 2015 Fresh Arts Festival at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. In 2014, artist Ali Brown had collected words of wisdom from patients and staff while she knitted with them.  These were printed onto small cards which the wisdom machine dispenses. Remaining in place for three months after the 2015 Festival, the Wisdom Machine dispensed 3100 tickets to staff, patients and their visitors: “The words of wisdom machine is brilliant – dispensing some much needed comforting words when required.  Please keep it up – makes the hospital a much nicer environment”. The World’s First Knitted Wisdom Dispensing Machine is on display throughout the conference, dispensing words of wisdom at the touch of a button!
